An interest in digital fabrication and its applications in architecture and art led the VFORM team to explore the interaction between robotics and musical instruments.

The project developed in collaboration with the GES-2 House of Culture and received grant support. The resulting musical installation, Sonus Ex (Machina), investigates new forms of synthesis between technology and sound.

As part of the project, the team designed a series of musical instruments created specifically to be played by a robot. The work followed a design research format without predetermined forms or sounds, with final solutions emerging through digital and practical experimentation.

The team analysed the machine’s capabilities beyond human limitations. For instance, a robot can execute extremely rapid, repetitive movements with perfect precision. Unlike humans, it also has greater freedom of motion in its “joints” (called “axes”), allowing the creation of instruments unconstrained by human biomechanics and ergonomics.
